Set atop a hill overlooking Lay Bay on the island of Saint Maarten, Island Escape was envisioned as more than a home by the sea. From the earliest stages of design, the goal was to create a residence that felt intrinsically connected to its surroundings—where architecture, interiors, and landscape exist in quiet conversation.
Throughout the home, organic textures, natural stone, hand-finished woods, and sun-washed tones echo the environment beyond its walls. Expansive windows and open-air spaces continually draw the eye toward the water, while thoughtful layers of texture bring warmth and ease indoors.
The result is a home that feels distinctly of its place: elevated yet unpretentious, refined yet inherently livable, and designed around the effortless rhythms of island life.
Blurring the Boundaries
Perhaps the clearest expression of Island Escape is found outside.
Expansive terraces stretch toward sweeping ocean views, while a resort-inspired pool, open-air kitchen, and relaxed lounge and dining areas create natural destinations for gathering throughout the day. Rather than treating the exterior as separate from the interiors, the same natural stone and organic material palette move between the two, creating a continuous visual language.
Here, the architecture gives way to the landscape. Mornings begin overlooking the water, meals move outdoors beneath the Caribbean sun, and evenings unfold against an ever-changing horizon.

Natural oak cabinetry and hand-laid stone bring an earthy permanence to the space, balanced by oversized woven pendants and an understated palette of soft, sun-washed finishes. Above, vaulted ceilings lend openness, while expansive windows fill the room with natural light.
Designed as much for gathering as it is for cooking, the open layout allows conversation to move easily between the kitchen, surrounding living spaces, and outdoors. It’s a room that feels grounded and substantial without losing the lightness and ease that define the home.

The family room takes a softer approach, designed around comfort, connection, and the panoramic views just beyond the windows.
Layered textiles, natural fibers, and tactile materials soften refined furnishings and classic silhouettes, creating a room that feels collected rather than overly composed. Every seat offers a connection to the landscape, allowing the shifting light and horizon to become part of the interior itself.

While much of Island Escape embraces a sense of calm, the game room brings a more playful energy to the home.
A custom wet bar finished in warm wood tones creates a natural gathering point for cocktails and conversation, while a shuffleboard table invites a little friendly competition. But the defining moment is entirely unexpected: an underwater window looking directly into the pool.
Filtered through shifting shades of blue, the window casts light and movement into the room like a living piece of art. It’s playful without feeling themed—a memorable architectural detail that captures the spirit of the home itself.

Upstairs, the primary suite turns inward.
Vaulted ceilings and exposed beams give the bedroom an airy sense of volume, while soft linens, warm woods, and natural textures create a quiet, tonal palette designed for rest. Rather than competing with the view, each element allows the surrounding landscape to remain part of the experience.
The adjoining bath draws more directly from the sea. Handcrafted blue tile introduces subtle color alongside rich walnut cabinetry, a sculptural stone sink, and refined metal accents.

Deep navy custom built-ins wrap the room in color, creating a rich architectural backdrop against the home's otherwise light, natural palette. Yet even in one of the home's most intimate spaces, the landscape is never far away. A glass door opens directly to the deck and sea beyond, balancing the enveloping interior with an expansive coastal view.
