A closer look at one of Island Escape’s most playful spaces, where warm materiality, unexpected architectural details, and a relaxed approach to entertaining come together.

Set atop a hill overlooking Lay Bay in St Maarten, Island Escape is designed around the rhythms of Caribbean living—open, effortless, and deeply connected to its surroundings. While a sense of calm carries throughout much of the home, the game room introduces a different energy.

Designed as a destination in its own right, the room invites family and friends to gather, play, pour a drink, and stay awhile. Refined materials keep the space connected to the rest of the home, while moments of surprise give it a personality entirely its own.

A Destination for Gathering

At the heart of the room, a custom wet bar creates a natural hub for entertaining. Warm wood tones bring richness to the space, while open shelving keeps the composition relaxed, displaying glassware and collected pieces within easy reach.

Nearby, a shuffleboard table shifts the mood from cocktail hour to casual competition. Rather than creating separate zones for entertaining and play, the design allows one to flow naturally into the next—making the room equally suited to an afternoon with family or an evening spent hosting friends.

The result feels elevated without becoming formal: a space designed around connection, conversation, and the simple pleasure of spending time together.

An Unexpected View

The room’s defining feature is also its most unexpected: an underwater window offering a direct view into the adjacent pool.

More than a playful architectural detail, the window transforms throughout the day as sunlight filters through the water. Shifting shades of blue, reflected light, and the movement of the pool create an ever-changing focal point that feels almost like a living work of art.

It’s a distinctly island moment, but one that avoids the expected language of coastal design. Instead of relying on motif, the room draws the surrounding environment inside through light, color, and experience.

Designed for Play

What makes the game room feel so considered is the balance between its playful purpose and the refined materiality seen throughout Island Escape.

Warm woods, natural textures, and understated furnishings create continuity with the rest of the home, while the bar, shuffleboard table, and pool window give the room its own sense of identity. Nothing feels overly themed or precious. Instead, every element supports the way the space is meant to be lived in.

From afternoon games to evening cocktails, it’s a room that encourages people to settle in, connect, and enjoy the slower pace of island life.

The Art of Island Entertaining

Throughout Island Escape, spaces for gathering are woven naturally into the experience of the home. The game room captures that philosophy in a particularly memorable way—pairing thoughtful design with an inherent sense of fun.

It’s sophisticated without feeling serious, social without feeling staged, and deeply connected to its surroundings without relying on traditional coastal cues. Every detail, from the warmth of the wet bar to the shifting blue light of the pool window, contributes to an atmosphere that feels effortless and entirely of its place.

The game room reflects what Island Escape does best: creating spaces where elevated design supports the way people actually want to live—comfortably, beautifully, and together.
