This Must Be the Place

Tucked into the rolling landscape on which it sits, Southall Farm & Inn offers something increasingly rare in hospitality: an experience that feels both intentional and entirely unforced. It’s the kind of place where design doesn’t compete with its surroundings, but instead quietly elevates them. Where the land leads, and everything else follows.

An Invitation to Slow Down

Set across 425 acres in Franklin, Tennessee, Southall Farm & Inn reimagines Southern hospitality through a lens that feels both grounded and forward-thinking. 62 guest rooms, 16 cottages, a holistic spa, activities that span across wellness and adventure, dining experiences that are intrinsically tied to estate, and at its core is a working farm where the land shapes everything from the culinary program to the pace of daily life. Old-growth trees, winding creeks, and open fields remain largely untouched, creating a sense that the property was revealed rather than built. What follows is a seamless blend of tradition and innovation, where every experience is rooted in what’s grown, gathered, and made on-site, an approach that feels less like hospitality, and more like a return to what truly sustains us.

From the moment we arrived, there was a noticeable shift in pace. We were a minute late to one of our scheduled experiences and were met with a simple, reassuring response from the founder: “You're right on time.” No clocks, no urgency. Just an open invitation to settle in. That philosophy carried through every part of our stay, creating space to fully absorb what was around us.

Throughout our stay, nothing felt manufactured or overly programmed. Instead, Southall creates opportunities to connect with nature, with craft, and with the people who bring it all to life.

"What stood out most was how deeply every experience was rooted in the land itself."

A World Within the Hive

The most unexpected and memorable of these opportunities was the Honey Extraction and Tequila Pairing experience. Set within a tucked-away apiary, complete with an underground lab, we were introduced to a world we had never encountered before. Here, bees are thoughtfully raised and bred. Queens selected with care, their colonies nurtured with an almost familial understanding. Jay Williams, the Head Bee Keeper and Director of Activities, spoke about them not just with expertise, but with familiarity, each hive carrying its own temperament, its own rhythm.

Inside the lab, we were guided through a honey tasting unlike anything we’ve experienced. Led by trained honey sommeliers, we learned how to smell, taste, and evaluate honey with the same nuance typically reserved for wine. Paired with tequila and light bites (ranging from sweet, to spicy, to salty), the tasting became fully immersive, engaging every sense and challenging every preconceived notion. What made it so impactful wasn’t just the novelty, but the authenticity. Southall hasn’t invented something artificial for the sake of experience; they’ve simply created access to passionate experts, to creative thinking, and to the natural processes already happening on the land.

Dining, Rooted in Place

That same ethos extended seamlessly into dining. Dinner at the signature restaurant, January, felt both worldly and deeply grounded. The kitchen, made up of chefs from across the globe, brings together a layered perspective, each dish carrying subtle influences of culture and personal history. And yet, everything is anchored by what’s available on property. Much of what’s served is grown just steps away, and the menu reflects that with intention.

There’s a clarity in that approach that we found incredibly compelling. When something isn’t available, the staff doesn’t substitute, it’s explained. No strawberries at breakfast, but instead, house-made jams crafted from the farm’s seasonal yield. It’s a small detail, but one that speaks volumes about their commitment to honoring what is present, rather than forcing what is not.

Where the Land Leads

As designers, we couldn’t help but notice how this philosophy translates physically across the property. The architecture and interiors are understated, almost intentionally so, allowing the landscape to remain the focal point. It’s not about creating a visual moment for the sake of it, it’s about enhancing what’s already there. The result is a sense of calm that feels genuine, not curated for show.

The beauty of Southall isn’t confined to the rooms, though they are thoughtfully done. It’s in the way the entire property unfolds. One experience naturally leading to the next: the honey you taste finds its way into your cocktail later that evening; the chickens you fed share their eggs on your plate the next morning. Everything is interconnected, reinforcing a larger narrative about place, process, and presence.

Even in quieter moments—walking the grounds, taking in the stillness, or simply noticing how the light moves across the landscape—there’s a sense that this is a place designed not to impress, but to restore. It calls you back to something more instinctual: rest, nourishment, fresh air, and the subtle rhythms of nature.

"In many ways, our stay reminded me of Daylesford Organic Farm in the Cotswolds, another place I’ve long admired for its ability to weave together land, food, and experience so seamlessly."

What lingered with us most wasn’t a single moment, but the feeling the entire stay created. A reminder that good design isn’t always about what you add, but what you allow. At Southall, nothing feels excessive or overstated. Instead, it’s an exercise in restraint, in authenticity, and in creating the kind of environment where both people and place are able to fully thrive.

It’s a philosophy that mirrors how we approach our work at Pure Salt, and why places like this resonate so deeply with us. Our projects are never about creating something that simply photographs well, they’re about shaping homes that support real life. We think about how a kitchen holds a slow morning, how natural light moves through a room over the course of a day, how materials wear in rather than wear out. Like Southall, the goal isn’t to impose a point of view, but to draw out what already exists, whether that’s the architecture, the setting, or the way our clients actually live.

The spaces we’re most drawn to creating are the ones that feel grounded and enduring, where restraint allows for clarity and authenticity builds connection. Because ultimately, that’s what real luxury looks like for our clients: spaces that restore, that function intuitively, and that create a sense of ease in everyday living.

Southall is a reminder that when design is rooted in environment and intention, it doesn’t just look beautiful—it changes how you feel, and how you live within it.
