Moody Modern Retreat in Malibu

Set in a hilltop neighborhood above the Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu, CA, our aptly named Malibu Project brings moody, modern textures to the stunning backdrop of its oceanfront view. With an open floor plan, this home is the epitome of indoor/outdoor living, exuding cozy, lived-in charm and organic styling.

01 Living Room

Open to the backyard and kitchen, the living room was designed to anchor the space with relaxed warmth. The richly layered textures in this oversized, yet cozy seating area bring together a few of Pure Salt’s favorite textiles—see the interplay of the linen slipcovered sectional, kilim wall hanging and ottomans, jute and hand-dyed wool rugs, and sheepskin-inspired armchairs—and natural elements in the wood and stone coffee and side tables. With other unique and expressive styling details, from the live plants, to the double-sided pillows, and table top decor, this space feels both intimate and energized, the abundant natural light and salty air keeping this room quintessentially Californian.

02 Dining Room

Embracing the moody nature of this slatted wood feature wall in the dining space focused the design to be earthy, organic, and grounded in natural elements. By mixing in a range of wood tones through the dining table and chairs, and directing the layout linearly to echo the lines and draw the eye, this space became a chic entertaining zone, blending seamlessly with the natural world right outside the windows.

03 Kitchen

The same slatted wall treatment follows into the kitchen from the dining room, connecting the two spaces and pulling a rich, warm wood into this otherwise sun-bleached kitchen. The ashy oak cabinetry and statement marble mix to create a modern, contemporary effect, while the styling elements bring in a more organic and natural touch, keeping this kitchen interesting and full of movement.

04 Primary Suite

Relying on the ample natural light that pours in from the large windows facing the bed, the design for the primary bedroom embraces a monotone color palette of taupes, creams, and whites, creating a serene environment that showcases incredible view into the backyard. The simplified palette of the room emphasizes texture and form within the design, with a refined slipcovered bed to anchor the room, architectural bench and nightstands to add contrast, and bedding and textiles that layer for a relaxed yet curated look. The earthy colored accents (moss lumbar pillow, slate-toned rug, and live greens) bring a pop of life to the space and echo the natural beauty of the outdoors just beyond the walls.

Modern aesthetics and convenience abound in the primary bathroom. With a slatted platform for the tub atop the oversized tile floor, and marble-covered vanity and walls, this space revels in materiality, playing the natural elements of wood and stone back and forth. The sleek inset cabinetry and clean-lined soaking tub add to the aura of simplicity in this space, furthering the sense of an in-home spa.

05 Guest Room I

One of two guest rooms in the home, its design leans cool and sophisticated. The statement headboard of slatted wood mimics the design feature found throughout the home, revisited in this setting to be even warmer and more inviting. Instead of table lamps, woven pendants in an organic shape flank the bed which is made with linens in a range of cool tones, bringing added texture and creating a relaxed and effortless space.

06 Guest Room II

The second guest room makes a big impact with its petite footprint. The cozy nature of this room is emphasized with layers — layers in the bedding, layers of texture in the materials, layers of detail to personalize and invite one in. Find reclaimed woods, nubby linens, and brass accents throughout for a vintage-inspired feel that leans earthy in its coloring. The linear art piece above the bed grounds the headboard on the crisp white wall and adds another layer of texture with its frayed linen edges.

07 Outdoors

With a view like this most eyes are drawn away from the furnishings, which called for a design that seamlessly integrated with the landscape while still being eye-catching in itself. The outdoor living area features a zone to lounge and entertain as well as a space to dine al fresco all while enhancing the view. With slipcovered sofas and teakwood tables, these spaces feel equally as comfortable as the ones indoors, complete with creature comforts like accent pillows, rugs, and plenty of inspired decor.

The second outdoor entertaining area is set back into the yard, closest to the ocean-front view. The sun deck and fire pit capture the true essence of this home—a space to connect with family and nature—allowing for comfortable lounging day and night. The teakwood chairs and chaise loungers ensure these spaces can withstand the coastal environment for the family to enjoy year-round.
