How To Choose the Right Rug

A rug is more than something underfoot—it’s the foundation of a room’s design. The right rug can define a space, bring warmth, introduce texture, and tie everything together. But with so many sizes, styles, and materials to choose from, it can be hard to know where to begin.

Whether you’re finishing a space or starting from scratch, here’s our go-to guide for finding the perfect rug for your home.

Rug Selection Guide

01 // Start With Size

Choosing the right size is key. A rug that’s too small can feel like an afterthought, while one that’s too large may overwhelm the room. Our simple rule? Bigger is usually better—aim to ground your furniture and define the area.

Living Rooms

Opt for a rug that allows all or most of your furniture legs to rest on it. In smaller spaces, just the front legs is perfectly fine—just make sure your rug spans the width of your sofa.

Dining Rooms

Choose a rug that extends at least 24” beyond your table on all sides to accommodate chairs when pulled out.

Bedrooms

Place a large rug under the bed, ideally extending out at least 2 feet on each side. Or, layer runners on either side for a balanced look.

02 // Choose the Right Material

Think about lifestyle, comfort, and where the rug will live.

  • Wool: Soft, durable, and naturally stain resistant. A classic choice for high-traffic areas.
  • Cotton: Lightweight and easy to clean, ideal for casual spaces or layering.
  • Natural fibers (Jute, Seagrass, Sisal): Bring texture and warmth—perfect for grounding a neutral space.
  • Synthetic blends: Great for busy households or outdoor use. Look for soft-feel options that still bring comfort and quality.

Designer Tip: If you love a layered look, place a natural fiber rug underneath and top with a smaller, patterned or plush rug.

03 // Find Your Style and Color Palette

Your rug is an opportunity to express personality and tone. Choose based on the feeling you want to evoke:

  • Light neutrals make a space feel airy and open.
  • Deep tones add richness and anchor a room.
  • Patterned rugs can hide wear and inject visual interest.
  • Solid or textured rugs add calm and cohesion.

For effortless elegance, we often opt for soft, sun-washed neutrals or subtle vintage-inspired patterns that feel timeless and lived-in.

04 // Think About Function

Ask how the space will be used.

  • Is it a high-traffic area? Go for a low-pile rug that’s easy to clean.
  • Do you want a cozy landing spot? Choose something plush underfoot, especially in bedrooms or lounges.
  • Is it purely decorative? Focus on texture and visual balance.

Don’t forget a rug pad—it helps with comfort, keeps your rug in place, and extends its life.
